History:
In 1873, Stanley Briggs waved farewell to his wife Elizabeth near the corner of their farm as he set out on a trip east. On 5 Nov 1873, he was one of fourteen passengers who died when the sidewheel steamer Bavarian burned after its boiler exploded 15 miles off Bowmanville in lake Ontario. Seven years later, Elizabeth died and was buried near the place where she last saw her husband. Her grave is now unmarked, however, they are both remembered on a plaque set near the corner of the property. |
