History:
According to the History of St. John’s United Church, Elmvale, the Methodist Church first came to the Elmvale area in 1871 when the Hillsdale and Penetang Mission was formed. The first Methodist church was built near the centre of Flos Township and was known as Field’s Methodist Church. According to Hogg’s Map of the County of Simcoe, 1871, the Field’s owned the N ½ of Lot 10 in Con 5 and the S ½ of Lot 10 in Con 6. The 1880 Map of the County of Simcoe shows the church and cemetery at the SE corner of Con 6 Lot 10. In 1880, George Downey, a school teacher and local preacher, married Betsy Field and purchased the farm where the church was located. He is shown on this lot in the 1890 Farmers Directory for the County of Simcoe. In 1881, the church burned to the ground when wild fires swept across most of Flos and Sunnidale Townships. Methodist service began in Elmvale in the Autumn of 1881 and so the Field’s church was not rebuilt. Downey worried over the lack of Sunday School teaching in the county so he purchased lumber and with the help of his neighbours, erected a Sunday School building on his farm. The structure was about 18 feet by 24 feet in size and was known as the “ Wee Church”. Eventually, Sunday School Services were also held at Elmvale and the building was sold and moved to Alvia Crowe’s farm on Hwy 92 to be used as a chicken hatchery. The structure was demolished in 1971. Most of the bodies in the burial ground that had been beside the church were removed to other cemeteries but it is understood that those who had died of the Spanish Influenza in the year 1918 were not touched. Today there is nothing to show the location of the former church or cemetery. Doreen Horton reports that one weathered tombstone was found in a nearby field amongst numerous fieldstones. |
